"new" nouveau
woven yardage light fixture
A hand-woven multi-dimensional light fixture inspired by Art Nouveau was created for the interior space of The Garden Room, a floridly decorated cocktail lounge. The Art Nouveau style was abstracted into two 54-inch woven textiles and turned into a functional art piece.
Manipulations on the pattern sequencing and sett were developed to create a geometric floral pattern, mimicking those found in the inspiration painting, The Maiden, by Gustav Klimt. Klimt's painting also informed the color proportions in the wovens; several of the yarns were hand-dyed to most accurately attain the color values in the painting. Lastly, both textiles were coated in a mica-infused bioplastic to add nuance to the shape and form of the sinuously draped wovens.

growing colors
sample collection
In response to WGSN's 2024 trend forecast, I created a collection inspired by "growing colors", a movement encouraging a thoughtful, innovative approach to harnessing and applying color.
Natural elements such as chameleons, spider webs, silverfish, dragonfly wings, and discocorma coral, as well as artists spearheading this movement, like Alice Potts and Lea Barbazanges, served as inpsiration for my samples. Two recipes for biodegradable plastic (bioplastic) were applied to coat the wovens as well as create different types of bio-yarn. Textile scraps from a local Athens business were also upcycled as weft in several samples. Overall, my goal was to be innovative in material use and strategic with my weft effects to create transformative color and spatial relationships.

sample collection
Focusing on translating impressionistic landscapes into tangible textiles, this collection relied on images and paintings to guide decisions for weft effects and color proportion, as well as yarn selection. Floats, yarn color-plying, as well as highly textured yarns were used to express the fuzzy, fleeting feeling the inspiration paintings evoke. A loud and unnaturalistic color palette contrasts the quiet familiarity of the landscapes.
